Being Beloved

God’s Unchanging Love

Because I know in the deep recesses of my mind that as much as anyone loves me, ultimately they are not God and neither am I. Love can change. People change, I change, we can all be unlovable ourselves as well as unable to love others at times. But God never changes.

God is not human, that he should lie,
not a human being, that he should change his mind.
Does he speak and then not act?
Does he promise and not fulfill? Numbers 23:19

I tend to take His goodness and try to change it into more and better and perfection. I fall for the very first lie from the serpent. That God’s goodness can surely be made a little better. Why do I not just say thank you and enjoy? Sometimes I have it all under control, I am grateful and I’m enjoying but eventually I feel like a slight change is needed. Just one little thing.

But God has already named Creation good and as His beloved it is already mine. God doesn’t lie, He doesn’t change His mind about loving us and being merciful to us. Who am I to decide what God has given needs to be slightly altered? When the world says you should sell this, use this skill, this talent, clamor always for bigger and better. Isn’t this making God’s gift into a physical endeavor rather than a spiritual endeavor?

God wants me. God wants me to believe in Him, to trust His promises, to be assured He is always coming from a place of love. He isn’t human. His love does not change like human love has the potential to do. God doesn’t shift or sift out only certain people. He invites all. But we don’t all come into all that He offers. Some people only get as far as salvation, and that reminds me of something C.S. Lewis said:

..like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased. From The Weight of Glory.

In some things we are too easily pleased. Human love, human works and skills and rewards; these things are not going with us into eternity. Only the things in our hearts and spirit are going with us. I pray I will listen carefully and obey quickly and move on from there.

My sheep hear My voice and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. John 10:27-28

CATHY DONALD:

Beautiful, thank you! I love the C.S. Lewis quote. I agree He offers so much more than salvation.
