Being Beloved

Sense of Smell

Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place, for we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing. - 2 Corinthians 2:14-15

We are the aroma of life. Maybe because it is almost Autumn I imagine Christ smelling of falling leaves, drying grass, woods and earth, remnants of frankincense. Do I diffuse the fragrance of Him? His knowledge? Or, do I approach others and diffuse anxiety? The scent of sweat and my own blood, not yet dead but closer to it.

The smell of too much. Too much perfume, too much smoke, too much food, me trying to control and know every aspect of a situation, to understand all, perfect all. Diffusion is the flow of matter from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration. Maybe this is how God desires us to be. A diffusion, a scent scattered about.

I am reminded this morning to slow down to let my thoughts be replaced with His knowledge instead. His wisdom can fill my soul and through Him I will triumph. Through Him I can walk outside into creation and smell leaves, I can smell cinnamon and pumpkin and coffee. I can breath deeply a lungful of air, just enough air to get me through another moment. Breathe in the aroma of life.
